Ingredients
Scale
- 30 ounces frozen shredded hash browns
- 6 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 medium onion, finely diced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: 1 cup cooked bacon or sausage, crumbled
- Optional: 2 stalks green onions, sliced
- Optional: Hot sauce to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Thaw frozen hash browns and squeeze out excess moisture using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper until uniform.
- Spread half of the dried hash browns into the bottom of the baking dish.
- Sprinkle half of the diced onion and half of the shredded cheese over the hash browns.
- Pour half of the egg mixture over the layer and spread gently.
- Repeat layers with remaining hash browns, onion, cheese, and egg mixture, ending with hash browns on top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Ensure hash browns are thoroughly dried to prevent a soggy casserole. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes after baking to allow eggs to set for clean slicing. Pre-shredded cheese contains anti-caking agents that prevent smooth melting, so grate cheese from a block for best results.
